Introduction

Haiyan Sheng, the associate professor in the English Department of BUCT, was once the visiting scholar in the English Department of the University of Houston and got her PhD in Beijing Foreign Studies University. She has taught English courses for over 20 years in BUCT. Her research field is Comparative Literature and Intercultural Studies, and she is the Expert Member of China Translation Association.

She is teaching six core required courses in the department, and is the tutor of the International Writing Center. She also undertakes teaching postgraduate students and foreign students in BUCT. She is the teacher of the Academic Writing Section of the online course Advanced Comprehensive English Writing (XuetangX, International Version). She supervises English majors’ graduation papers and has supervised a number of College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Projects at both national and university levels. She has won the Dabao Teaching Award of BUCT, the Third Prize of the 5th Teaching Performance Competition, the Excellent Head Teacher, the Domestic Visiting Scholarship Fund by China Ministry of Education (2007), the State Scholarship Fund for Visiting Scholar by China Scholarship Council (2009), the Nominee of the Brightest Star- Top Ten BUCT Teachers (2019), and Excellent Faculty of the Year in 2014 and 2020.

She is the project leader of “The Influence of Cleanth Brooks’ Irony Theory on Stephen Owen’s Interpretation of Yin-hsiu”, which was sponsored by Beijing Cultural Exchanges and World Cultural Studies Institute Grant (No. BWSK201311). She is the author of over 20 journal papers on literary studies and English writing, and the co-editor of the textbooks An Introduction to Modern English Classics and Advanced Comprehensive English Writing (MOOC). Her most recent book, Cleanth Brooks’ Poetic Theory: From the Perspective of Intercultural Dialogue, was published in 2020 (ISBN 978-7-207-12085-4). From 2019 to 2022, she participated in three BUCT teaching reform projects, and presided two university-enterprise cooperation projects. In 2023, she was awarded a Demonstration Course for Education and presided a research project on Undergraduate Education and Teaching Reform, both at university level. She keeps the couplet in The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons (Wen-hsin tiao-lung) as her motto: 水停以鉴,火静而朗.

Teaching

  • She is teaching six core required courses in the department, such as Academic Writing, An Introduction to English Literature, Intercultural Communications, English-Speaking Countries- An Introduction, English Writing I & II,  and the selective course An Introduction to Literary Masterpieces. She is also teaching Basic Methods of Foreign Language Studies and Practice in English Teaching with other teachers. The courses are well received by the students. Meanwhile, she is the tutor of the International Writing Center.

  • She also undertakes teaching postgraduate students and foreign students in BUCT.

  • She is the teacher of the Academic Writing Section of the online course Advanced Comprehensive English Writing (XuetangX, International Version).
