Introduction

Yuan Gao received his B.S. from Nanjing University in 2005. He obtained his Ph.D. in 2011 from Brandeis University under the supervision of Prof. Bing Xu.  He was a postdoctoral fellow with Prof. Bing Xu at Brandeis University during 2011-2013 and with Dr. Ferenc Horkay at NIH during 2013-2015. His independent research career started in November 2015 at National Center for Nanoscience and Technology (NCNST). Currently he moved to Beijing University of Chemical Technology in 2023. Along with the fundamental research in supramolecular chemistry, biomaterials and drug delivery, his work was recognized by several awards including NRC RAP Award, the Hundred Talents Project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and NSFC Outstanding Youth Foundation.

Overview of scientific research situation:

Our research focused on the field about functional biomaterials via in situ construction. In regard of the critical issues in targeted drug delivery with high efficiency, we have extensively studied a drug delivery system based on supramolecular chemistry and self-assembly. (1) Based on the kinetics selectivity, the pathological conditions e.g. over-expression of enzymes or dysregulated metabolism in cancerous cells, promoted the efficient conversion of assembling molecules. These assembling molecules therefore selectively self-assembled and generated biomaterials in situ in pathological focus; (2) Clarify the dynamic structures of the in situ constructed supramolecular biomaterials and the interactions with bio-macromolecules and sub-cellular organelles, guiding the molecular design for biomaterials; (3) Explore the in situ constructed biomaterials as drug carrier to realize the spatiotemporal controlled drug activation via co-assembly or bioorthogonal decaging mechanisms. The overall research has demonstrated a general and effective strategy for anticancer treatment with satisfactory biosafety.
